Morning Warm-Up/Discovery Centers/Reading Lessons
When your child comes in the morning they will begin with some short desk work followed by quiet centers such as puzzles, folder games, or looking at books specific to the day's theme. At this time I will pull aside kids for specific short phonics lessons.
Circle Time/Calendar
We will gather as a class at the rug and talk about the calendar, patterns, weather, seasons, etc. Each child will get a turn being the calendar leader and leading the class during this time. We will have a sharing portion during our calendar time where each child will have a few minutes to share out their family, a pet, a talent, etc.
Music
While we are still at the rug we will begin music time. This will be a fun time to move around and learn about loud, soft, high and low.
Skill Development: Phonics & Reading
At this time we will focus on a specific phonics skill. We will learn about letters, sounds, blending, and some children will be ready to learn sight words. The class will be sorted into small groups for center activities which will help each child learn at their level.
Inside/Outside Play Centers
Play is a great way for children to learn. Depending on the weather the children will play inside or outside. They will learn about sharing, compromise and team work. They will also practice gross motor skills during this time, like kicking a ball.
Snack
The children will be hungry and ready for a snack at this point. There will be a rotating list for which child brings the snack. It can be something simple like crackers, granola bar, apples, carrots, or string cheese. If you forgot or would prefer not providing the snack I will do so and your child can still pass it out. A sharing bag will come home with a form to fill out to help your child during the sharing portion of calendar time. You are welcome to come watch your child present, but do not need to be there.
Story Time
We will gather at the rug once again and the children can listen to a story that ties into our theme for the day. During this time they will learn about parts of a book, like the cover and turning pages. We will also discuss rhyming patterns, repetition, and reading comprehension.
Theme Activities: Art/Crafts
The children will make a craft or art project that goes along with the theme or letter of the day. This project may or may not come home the same day it's made. This is when kids will get good practice with scissors and painting.
Skill Development: STEM, Math & Science
One day we will focus on math and the other day we will focus on science. We will practice patterns, sorting, counting and adding. We will also do class experiments and learn about the scientific process.
Clean up
Learning how to clean up after yourself is an important skill. Each child will be a helper and have a specific assignment to clean up our classroom before heading home for the day.
